Songs in the Night

God gives songs in the night, that is, when our conditions are ever so dark, sad, and downhearted. God, in his providence and promise is sufficient, not only to support us, but also to fill us with joy and consolation, to enable us in everything to give thanks, and even to rejoice in tribulation. In suffering sorrow, failure and in despair, God’s presence is a melody in the heart. He gives songs in the night!

If we are to find a song in the night, we must expect that God will give, even in the midnight of sorrow, the songs that have the power of transforming the present gloom of night into the hope of a bright morning. Our ability to sing praises in our deepest darkness does not explain suffering, but it negates its poison, and our ability to sing them is for God alone to give. It is possible for him to inspire his sweetest songs when we are drinking the bitterest cup.

We must not look for troubles to produce the songs; sorrow is not the parent of gladness, but in spite of what we are going through, God can give us a song in the night. A song wherein we can find the peace of God, the presence of God, and the power of God to handle all that we go through.

  • Nights of Uncertainty, Psalm 77:5, 6
  • Nights of Oppression, Job 35:10
  • Nights in the Garden, Matthew 26:36
  • Nights between Good Friday and Resurrection, Mark 15:42
  • Nights between Weeping and Joy, Psalm 30:5
  • Hannah’s Song, 1 Samuel 1:11

Can These Bones Live?

In Ezekiel’s vision of the valley of dry bones, we find that Ezekiel brought three messages of restoration and deliverance to the people of Judah. The first message, verses 1-8, was that the dry bones in the valley were a picture of the spiritual condition of God’s people. They were spiritually dead. The second message, verses 9-11, was that God would reassemble them into a body. The third message, verses 12-14, is that God would deliver them from bondage in Babylon, from their hopeless situation, give them life again in their homeland, and fill them with his Spirit. Although we are separated from Ezekiel by at least 2500 years, the message that the LORD gave to him in the vision of dry bones applies to us.

The message of Ezekiel was that God would restore to life the “dead bones” of Israel—a nation whose faith had long been dead. God still has that power. His Spirit is the source of all life-giving power, which can revive the souls of all who, in faith, place themselves in the hands of their Creator and Redeemer. Good Advice from a Player

“He who finds a wife finds a good thing, and obtains favor from the Lord.” (Proverbs 18:22)

This sermon series is entitled, “Good Advice from a Player.”  I entitled it so because when I look at the life of Solomon the number of wives, princesses, and concubines it seems to me that he had, at least in his later years, somewhat of a player spirit in his heart.  He had an insatiable desire for the company and pleasures of the opposite sex.  He surrounded himself with riches.  He would be considered the Hugh Hefner of Playboy Fame, and the Donald Trump of his day.

When we read the book of Proverbs, we read bits and pieces of wisdom from supposedly the wisest man who ever lived on the earth.  We find a complete body of advice regarding divine ethics, politics, and economics.  Solomon exposes every vice, recommends every virtue, and suggests rules for the control of ourselves in every relation and condition, and every turn of life.  The question before us is can we get credible advice fro someone like a Solomon.  Can  we separate his life from his words and find meaning and constructive wisdom to live our lives?  I believe we can.

  • Is Solomon’s Advice Credible?
  • Who’s Looking
  • What’s A Good Thing Look Like?
  • Obtaining God’s Favor

What are Your Bread Issues?

What are Your Bread Issues?

Oftentimes, if we choose to follow God, we must entertain the issues of bread. Questions of how we are going to live from day to day enter in and often keep us from attempting great things, reaching out to embrace our hopes and dreams, following God’s leadings and promptings in our hearts, and can keep us status quo. These bread issues can sometimes anesthetize us and keep us from acting upon God ordained opportunities that come our way, or distract us from the more important issues of life. I could be, but  . . . I would do, but . . . . I would try, but  . . . if it were not for bread issues.

What are your bread issues? What are the day to day issues regarding the living and maintenance and sustaining of life that trouble your heart and spirit and possibly keep you from realizing your full potential?

The sermon titles found in this series are as follows:

  • Day by Day (Luke 11:3)
  • Compromising Future Blessings for Present Comforts (Genesis 25:34)
  • Will You Return to Your Father? (Luke 15:17, 18a)
  • One Scoop From Empty (1 Kings 17:12)
  • A Whole Lotta’ Shakin’ Going On (Mark 6:11)
  • Give Us This Bread (John 6:34)

Excerpts from the Diary of Nehemiah

Excerpts from the Diary of Nehemiah

Nehemiah emerges as the most significant visionary, businessman, and builder among the many people of the Old Testament. He was motivated to do a job for God that had incredible obstacles surrounding it. He was given a great vision and empowered by God he led the people to own it as their own. He overcame criticism, fear, doubt; and rebuilt the walls and gates of Jerusalem. All those challenges are also a part of our life’s journey. We want and need to be ready to face the obstacles that will come our way. There is no greater biblical model than that which can be seen in the book of Nehemiah.

As we see how he responded to his heart’s urging and the success he achieved, we want to model his spiritual technique and establish a biblical mindset that can endure to the end. The diary of Nehemiah’s life contains key principles of leadership with which every Christian should be acquainted, no matter what your position in life. He was just a regular guy who caught a divine glimpse of what could and should be done, then went after it with all his heart.

The sermon titles found in this series are as follows:

  • Meet the Man (Nehemiah 1:1)
  • When You Hear (Nehemiah 1:4)
  • From Fear, to Faith, to Favor (Nehemiah 2:2)
  • Let Us Rise Up and Build! (Nehemiah 2:18)
  • What Will the Record Show? (Nehemiah 3:5)

A Matter of the Mind: Victory Over Depression

In our country alone depression affects more than 20 million people each year.  The reason for such widespread depression is man’s disappointing and unsuccessful search for answers to the fundamental questions of life: Who am I?  Where did I come from?  Why am I here?  Where am I going?  These questions are in the heart of every person.  How we seek to answer them may well determine how fulfilling our life will be.

All depression begins in the mind with improper thinking patterns that consist of two things: unrealistic expectations or misplaced dependencies.  Unrealistic expectations occur when a person simply does not face life as it really is, but looks at life and people as he or she thinks it should be.  Misplaced dependencies occur when a person depends upon someone or something else other than God for his happiness, self-worth, and meaning to life.

The purpose of this series is to illustrate biblical principles and insights towards understanding the matter of depression.  The sermon titles found in this series are as follows:

  • Building the Foundation for Truth (Colossians 2:8)
  • Renewing Your Mind (Romans 12:2)
  • A Proper Self-Image (Proverbs 23:7a, b)
  • Your Personal Counselor (John 14:16-17)
  • Responding to Life’s Disappointments (1 Thessalonians 5:18)
  • Living One Day at a Time (Matthew 6:34)

We Would See Jesus: Parts 1-4

What is the expectation of those of us who come to worship? We come with an unspoken request to see Jesus. Why? Because deep within the recesses of our hearts, we expect that somehow being at church is going to make a difference. Believers need to see Jesus not just as the historical incarnation of God, God in the flesh, whose passion resulted in the forgiveness of our sins, but as the ever present God whose power we can appropriate to intervene in all of our life situations.

Our vision of who Jesus is determines whether we will live spiritually impotent lives, going through the motions of being, acting, and looking like Christians; or whether we live spiritually passionate and powerful lives.

In looking at some of the compound names of Jehovah, the personal name of God, we can experience His inexhaustible sufficiency, understand how every believer can experience the power of God in their lives, and have Him step into every circumstance and situation. We can see Him provide guidance, understanding, and direction, alleviate pain and suffering, heal us of all our diseases, and by his divine providence allow us to achieve material, emotional, and spiritual success.

Parts 1-4

  • A Modern Dilemma (2 Timothy 3:4, 5)
  • What’s In A Name (Exodus 3:14)
  • A Blank Check (John 8:58)
  • Can You Name Your Place—Jehovah-Jireh (Genesis 22:14)
